Jakobsson's son passes away day of marriage vote

SPRINGFIELD -- Rep. Naomi Jakobsson left her dying son's bedside Tuesday to vote for same-sex marriage.
SPRINGFIELD -- Rep. Naomi Jakobsson left her dying son's bedside Tuesday to vote for same-sex marriage. Jakobsson, the only Central Illinois lawmaker who voted in favor of the bill, began the day with her husband at a hospice center with the couple's 46-year old son. She rushed to the capitol to vote for same-sex marriage.

In the end, Jakobsson's vote was part of a slim two-vote margin in the State House. Jakobsson left the capitol shortly after the vote. Her son died later that night.

The bill's sponsor called the decision courageous and incredibly compassionate. The State House paused for a moment Wednesday morning to recognize the Jakobsson family during this difficult time. Jakobsson was a co-sponsor of the same-sex marriage bill.
