Lawmakers tackling next year's budget

ILLINOIS -- Yeah or nay? Lawmakers are voting on 77 budget bills in the Illinois House.
ILLINOIS -- Yeah or nay? Lawmakers are voting on 77 budget bills in the Illinois House. The fate of the income tax extension is still up in the air.

Democrats say they have to do something, so they're working under the assumption the temporary income tax hike will be extended. However, Republicans say that's premature.

Thursday, the House voted on several appropriations bills including everything from funding education to veterans affairs. Lawmakers say state agencies need to know how much money they're going to get. Democrats are "guesstimating" the budget will be about $38 billion, but again, Republicans say they're jumping the gun.

Of the 77 budget bills being discussed, 55 have passed the House. Those now head to the Senate for debate. Lawmakers have until the end of the month to vote on next year's budget.
