Libraries could become "healthcare information highways"

SPRINGFIELD -- The federal government is calling on librarians around the country to help sign people up for insurance under the nation's healthcare overhaul.
SPRINGFIELD -- The federal government is calling on librarians around the country to help sign people up for insurance under the nation's healthcare overhaul. As many as 17,000 libraries could take part in the effort to help uninsured American sign up for coverage.

The plan will be presented at the American Library Association Conference this weekend. Nancy Huntley, of Lincoln Library, says she thinks Springfield has a chance of being chosen.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is creating training materials to help librarians learn more about the law. Huntley says the library already provides the public with tax forms and other documents, so this effort could be helpful.
