CHAMPAIGN -- You can feel safer swimming in one community. Lifeguards at Sholem Aquatics Center got top marks in safety as the result of a surprise audit.

The guards were judged on safety drills including how quickly and carefully they scan the pool. Park district officials say they're proud they didn't just meet expectations, they exceeded them.

"That is our main goal is to make sure all of our patrons feel comfortable," said Dan Dudley, a coordinator at Champaign Aquatics. "We take it very seriously. Our highest priority is the training of our lifeguards."

The pool is run by the park district but the guards are trained by a private company. Dudley says they usually have 20 lifeguards working at once.
