SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Lottery has changed a lot of lives. Now, it's hoping to help save lives too. It's taking on some new responsibilities. From now on, anytime there's an Amber Alert issued in Illinois, the lottery will broadcast it.

Alerts will be posted on advertising monitors found inside places like gas stations and grocery stores. There are more than 8,000 statewide.

It adds to alerts already issued on radio and electronic billboards. Lottery officials say it will help reach more people who may have missed other messages. Law enforcement says anything which helps spread the word during an Amber Alert is a good thing.

Another benefit of putting it on lottery screens; if there's a picture of the missing child, the photo can be put up for everyone to see.

Lottery officials say they're set up to use the screens as soon as possible, but they hope they won't have to any time soon.
