Mayor-elect anxious to get started

RANTOUL -- A new mayor will soon take over.
RANTOUL -- A new mayor will soon take over. Chuck Smith beat incumbent Neal Williams Tuesday night. It was a close race. Only about 100 votes separated the candidates.

But, the mayor-elect says getting the new title is a great vote of confidence from his community. He's been working with the public for many years. Before running for mayor, Smith was a trustee for the township and the school board.

Some projects he worked on included putting the aquatic center and skate-park in town. He also helped develop a drainage system.

But, as the new mayor, his focus will be rebuilding the image and reputation of Rantoul and creating jobs. It's a platform residents agree with.

Smith moved to Rantoul more than 40-years ago when he was transferred to the Chanute Air Force Base. He met his wife there and they've stayed in town ever since. He'll take over the post in May.

Williams has been mayor since 2001. He couldn't be reached for comment.
