SPRINGFIELD -- Residents of a group home are getting a helping hand. United Cerebral Palsy's Land of Lincoln home was destroyed by fire this month. Three men with cerebral palsy lived there.

With United Way funds and donations, about $10,000 has been collected. The residents moved into a new rental home this week.

The money will cover their needs and pay for a new van. Their previous van was also destroyed in the fire.

SPRINGFIELD -- A group home for men with cerebral palsy was destroyed by fire. It's a major loss for those who lived there.

The group's rental home went up in flames Sunday afternoon. No one was inside at the time. Investigators believe the fire started in the garage.

United Cerebral Palsy's Land of Lincoln helps take care of the men through funds from the Department of Human Services. Elizabeth Gebhart says they don't have the normal coping skills that we might have.

"It'd be more like maybe a younger child, in some ways because they don't have all of the coping skills that an adult would necessarily have so a little more difficult for them."

One of UCP's transport vans was in the driveway at the time, and was also destroyed. The men are left with very few personal belongings. They're staying in hotels and temporary housing for now, but UCP hopes to reunite them soon in a new rental home.

If you would like to make a donation to help the men get back on their feet, you can reach out to United Cerebral Palsy Land of Lincoln through the "Donate Now!" link on their website. You can also call (217) 525 - 6522.
