CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- Three people are accused of intimidating witnesses in a murder in Champaign. Two were already in police custody facing charges related to the crime.

Devon Craig has been charged with murder. His brother, Paul, faces weapons charges. Authorities say they were able to intimidate witnesses from jail because inmates are allowed to use phones. Officials say they may have been calling people and trying to get witnesses to change their testimony. It's a crime prosecutors take seriously.

The Craig brothers and Markeeta McFarland could face up to 14 years in prison for it. It's all in connection to the murder of Allen Redding in June. It happened during the day and investigators say a lot of people saw the shooting. Police say they'll do whatever they can to protect witnesses who are helping in this case.

"The witnesses that have come forth, in my humble opinion, are the brave, honest people in these communities," said Champaign Police detective Jim Bednarz. "It's kind of sad though sometimes that they're shunned or they're looked down upon because they're actually going and doing the right thing."

Investigators say intimidation charges aren't all that common here, but because it's a murder investigation, it's increasing.

Police are still looking for 30-year old Micah Hopkins. He's also charged with Redding's murder. Overall, police say people coming to them with information is a good sign. It shows they're trying to take back their community and they're not willing to accept the violence.
