URBANA -- Another shooting, this time near Booker T. Washington Elementary School. A homeless woman was seriously hurt. Police responded to the call about 4:30 am, Wednesday to the corner of Eads and Wright streets. Last week, a man was killed about a block away on North Sixth Street, in Champaign. WCIA-3's Anthony Antoine has more.

Police are still questioning neighbors. Less than an hour ago, Police Chief Pat Connolly was going door-to-door.

The shooting happened here, but if you look across the street, you see the school. To the north of the school was the scene of another crime. With school just around the corner, neighbors say this isn't a good sign.

Christopher Johnson is babysitting 3-year old Michaela. Just feet away, police are working yet another crime scene.

"I got in from work late. Went to sleep. Woke up in the middle of the night, then just shots. I heard around nine or ten shots and then a car drive off."

Police say a 22-year old homeless woman was shot. They found her on the sidewalk on the north side of West Eads Street, near the entrance to this apartment complex and across the street from Booker T. Washington Elementary School.

"That's sad. That's spooky and it's scary."

Neighbors like Lizzie Carter say this should be a safe neighborhood.

"I'm looking at a school across the street. I'm looking at a park, a recreation center. This is for people to live."

Not a place for neighbors to be scared.

"It startled me. I'm like, wow! I thought I left that neighborhood, and here it is again."

The victim had surgery and she's in critical condition.

"This is not the first time I've heard about trouble over here at this complex."

The facility is new. Neighbors say police patrol the area often, and the property manager says they have additional security on staff, but neighbors aren't sure if that's enough.

"Instead of it being at my back door, it's down the street. For one, I don't think I want to take this route anymore."

Police haven't made any arrests.

URBANA -- A homeless woman is in the hospital after being shot. It happened about 4:30 am, Wednesday, at the corner of Eads and Wright streets. The victim had surgery and is in critical condition. Police say they found her on the sidewalk, close to the entrance of Hamilton on the Park.

Neighbors say they heard multiple gunshots, then a car speeding off. Police say the 22-year old victim used to live in Urbana, but is currently homeless. Detectives haven't identified a motive or made any arrests.

Hamilton on the Park is a relatively new complex. All of the apartments were leased in December, but police have responded to multiple calls in the area. Property managers say they have regular meetings with police and have a security company patrolling the area to prevent crime.
