CHAMPAIGN -- City leaders hope, if they build it, business will come. There are changes in parking along Washington Street as part of the city's plan to slow traffic and speed up business. WCIA-3's Jessica Shaw has more.

They city has covered the meters for parallel parking. Now, instead, you'll find diagonal parking spaces. A new paint job is expected to lure shoppers to the area.

"It will hopefully slow traffic in that stretch. People can move pretty quickly through there."

"We're getting some new business developments on the north side of the street. Parking for those businesses has been challenging."

The changes also make it easier for pedestrians trying to cross.

"The curb bump also shortens crossing distances."

They're all things city leaders think will boost business at places like Complete Care Pharmacy.

"We like to have people to access us."

"A lot of students, a lot of other people, too."

Leaders hope a new coat of paint will help the area grow. They plan for this stretch by downtown to become a hot spot.

"We think it's extremely important to support that and make it more usable."

That support starts here. City officials also want to improve the sidewalk landscape, but they're not sure when it will start. They have to secure funding first.
