Officer of the Year

CHAMPAIGN -- An area police officer has a new title; "Officer of the Year."
CHAMPAIGN -- An area police officer has a new title; "Officer of the Year." Ed Wachala has 17-years at the Champaign Police Department. He is also a school resource officer at Centennial High School.

Officers say he goes above and beyond to help the community. Wachala says he's grateful for the award, but it's all in a day's work.

"Our whole department is like this. I'm just about making this a better place for people to live, a safe place for people to live and help people get through problems they have. We all have problems in our lives and it doesn't make you a horrible person. Maybe you're just having a bad day," Wachala said.

Wachala is also a good Samaritan. Last fall, a school bus broke down and the kids had to wait for help to arrive. He ordered several pizzas, had them delivered to the bus and picked up the tab.
