PAWNEE -- You don't have to be a book lover to appreciate a good library. Our Town's public library is just that. But, it wasn't always that way. WCIA-3's Alex Davis finds out what it makes this place special.

"This place is big, it's open, it's bright, it's wonderful."

Right in the heart of the downtown square, you'll find a gem. It's the Pawnee Public Library. But, it wasn't always the case. Before the site opened in 2003, library-goers had to look for books in a cramped, cold, dark place.

"The old library was just a little bitty, little bitty place. It was hard to find anything. It was hard to maneuver in there."

But, the new location is just one of the reasons community members and others are so sold. Not only can folks easily come and go, but they feel at home.

"It does hook up to the fact that it's on the square."

But that's not all. Humble worker bees, go the extra mile for cardholders, checking out books for people and delivering them in person.

"It's amazing. Our library rocks. It's really good. It's a great place to go. I mean, we just go up there, well, we go up there all the time."

They also offer summer reading programs, help people look for work online and host adult enrichment courses.

"I think they feel good about giving to it and I think they feel good about taking from it."

And the circle of giving has helped keep it going. Because community members care so much about their library, the collection here continues to grow.

Their collection of 50,000 books is getting bigger. The library often takes in book donations, showing just how much its success means to the town.

The library has the record to prove it. In 2004, the Pawnee Public Library received the Library of the Year Award.
