CHAMPAIGN -- It wasn't quite what they were expecting for the C-U at Home event, One Winter Night. This past weekend, the street-sleeping took place downtown to raise awareness of homelessness.

But, the fundraiser fell well below its goal of $60,000, bringing in about $40,000. The executive director hopes to still hit that mark. C-U at Home hopes to open a new daytime center and a recovery home with money raised.

CHAMPAIGN -- Each night, 500 people in Champaign County are forced to sleep outside on a park bench or sidewalk. Friday night, 30 people joined them for One Winter Night. Not only are they raising awareness, they're raising money for the cause.

It was one of the warmest nights for the event in years, but volunteers say they were willing to brave any temperature because some don't have a choice. Their goal was to raise $60,000 by 6 am.

CHAMPAIGN -- Champaign County has the third highest homeless rate in the state. But, instead of just learning statistics, some people headed to the streets to make a change.

The tradition, One Winter Night 2014, kicked off about 6 pm. Thirty people will spend the night out on the street in support of the 500 who do it in Champaign County every night.

Some of those involved in Friday night's charity event are city officials, pastors, police officers or just people in the community who want to make a difference. Each is trying to raise $1,000.

$18,000 has already been donated from private sponsors. The goal is to raise $60,000. Donations can also be made online.
