URBANA -- The Champaign County State's Attorney's Office is recommending a 3-1/2 year sentence for a man who pleaded guilty to one count of reckless homicide. 59-year old Willie Craft admitted killing Mimi Liu, in October.

Authorities say Craft was driving his pickup truck erratically on Lincoln Avenue, about 10 am, when he hit a street sign, jumped the sidewalk and hit Liu and Spandana Matravadi. Matravadi suffered a broken ankle. Liu died as a result of her injuries.

Officials say an investigation revealed Craft is a diabetic who was treated at the scene for "significantly low blood sugar levels." He told police he did not have insurance on his vehicle and hadn't driven in more than three years because of his condition. He also hadn't eaten breakfast that morning because he was preoccupied about getting insurance and license plates for his vehicle.

A charge of aggravated DUI was dismissed as part of the plea agreement. Reckless homicide is a Class 3 felony, punishable by 2 - 5 years in prison. Craft will be sentenced July 9.
