CHAMPAIGN – A man was shot around noon Saturday near North Sixth Street and East Beardsley Avenue. The victim was taken to the hospital. Police say he is in critical condition.

Neighbors heard multiple shots and called police. Authorities are still searching for the shooter. Witnesses say the suspect was an armed man, between the ages of 17 and 25. He ran away on foot.

The shooting has left neighbors scared for their own safety.

"The only thing I heard was three shots, like, 'pow, pow, pow,” said a woman who lives nearby where the shooting happened.

That’s when she says she looked outside.

"All I can say is, someone was shot. I didn't see it done, but it was done. He was on the ground. I could see blood."

Several other shots were fired. Those bullets only hit homes. The woman blames homeowners who rent to anyone to make money for the decline in her neighborhood. She also believes the police need to be more proactive.

"They're not in the neighborhood as often as I would like," she said.

Now she says it’s up to her and her other neighbors to try and make it safer like it once was. She’s been here for 50 years. She says gun violence in her neighborhood makes her feel terrible.

“We've got a good neighborhood and good people," she said.

Police say the man who was shot is 22-years old. He was unconscious when they arrived and taken to the hospital.
