Proposal to keep 911 calls confidential

ILLINOIS -- A new idea could keep 911 calls private. Currently, anyone can access the recordings through the Freedom of Information Act.
ILLINOIS -- A new idea could keep 911 calls private. Currently, anyone can access the recordings through the Freedom of Information Act.

But, one lawmaker wants to strike them from the public record. The idea is to protect victims and their families from having to relive tragic events when 911 calls are played on the news or online.

But, one victims' rights group worries the measure will do more harm than good. Opponents say victims' families often use things like 911 tapes to educate others.

Under the proposal, only judges, law enforcement and the person whose voice is on the call could get a copy.
