Restaurant reviews leave room for worry

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- Some people are thinking twice about where they eat.
CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- Some people are thinking twice about where they eat. You might too after what the latest health inspections found behind the counter. WCIA-3's Megan Brilley has the story.

Six restaurants failed. Inspectors found some pretty gross stuff in kitchens around the viewing area.

"I was thinking about going to Panda Express, but I decided to come here instead."

But, UI senior John Poulakos might want to rethink that decision. Cravings restaurant on Wright Street was just hit with its seventh failed health inspection.

"My friend said something about that."

They saw it on cu-citizenaccess.org. There it lists failed inspections at Cravings, Ambar, Sakanaya and Sitara restaurants.

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District found some employees didn't wash their hands, sanitize plates or keep food at the right temperature. But, what was found at Shanghai makes those mistakes seem minor.

"Inspectors found sewage backup from the floor drains into the kitchen. What's your reaction to that?"

"I didn't know that."

It was shut down in November, but opened up the next day after the sewage was cleaned up.

"The fact that they had sewage backed up doesn't make you not want to eat your take out?"

"No."

Shanghai was re-inspected last month and passed. Employees at Cravings say its several failed inspections are because their coolers are too small and some food has to be left out.

"This has happened seven times now. That doesn't bother you?"

"I've ate her quite a bit and I've never gotten sick."

Despite the news, most of the restaurants we visited were full and people say it's a risk they're willing to take.

"I don't know. I'll think about it. I'll try it. See what happens."

Most restaurants were able to remedy their problems quickly. But, because this is Cravings seventh fail, it must pass every inspection the rest of this year or it could be shut down.
