Safe driving expo teaches teens a lesson

MATTOON -- Teens got a lesson in safety before getting behind the wheel.
MATTOON -- Teens got a lesson in safety before getting behind the wheel. State Farm hosted its first ever Safe Driving Expo. It was held at the Coles County Airport.

Teenagers aged 14-17 were invited to learn the dangers of texting while driving by trying the risky task while driving a golf cart. They also took a look at mangled cars that were involved in accidents. Organizers hope it gives teens a wakeup call.

"We've seen it in just the last few years here in Illinois, where Illinois requires the 50 hours of driving. Teenage traffic deaths have decreased significantly," said Stan McMorris, state farm agent.

"If we just make a difference on one life, save on life, prevent one accident, that was our goal today," added Sherri Branson, State Farm agent.

Mattoon police, state police, Coles County Sheriff's Office and several other agencies helped out. Branson says events like this one are happening nationwide.
