Same-sex marriage supporters rally in Capitol

SPRINGFIELD -- It's been two years since the end of "Don't Ask - Don't Tell."
SPRINGFIELD -- It's been two years since the end of "Don't Ask - Don't Tell." One group is using the anniversary to push for a same-sex marriage law in Illinois.

"Organizing for Action - Illinois" called on lawmakers Friday to support the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act. An Air Force veteran at the Capitol says he served his country to protect the rights and freedoms for all Americans.

Joseph Savage says the U.S. is a great country which has accomplished a lot, so now it's time to allow all people who love one another the basic right to marry. He says lawmakers should not have the right to legislate love.

The group says, with the Supreme Court's recent ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act, and California's Proposition 8, they should have the momentum to get same-sex marriage passed here in Illinois.

Supporters say they want the legislature to call the bill for a vote during the fall veto session. The spring session ended without Representative Greg Harris (D) calling the bill for a vote in the house.
