CHAMPAIGN -- A group of students presented their science fair projects on a Saturday. This is the first year for the Saint Elmo Brady STEM Academy. The program exposes African-American, 4th and 5th grade boys to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The kids spent eight weeks working on their projects and this weekend, they presented their projects inside Booker T. Washington Elementary.

"The kids want mentors. To see mentors that actually look like them is important. Number two is to let them know that they can be something other than an athlete, a musician, and to let them know that engineering and science careers are rewarding.

The program is named after Elmo Brady, the first African-American man to earn a doctoral degree in chemistry. He graduated from the UI.
