Senior chases suspect after wife's purse snatched

SPRINGFIELD -- An elderly woman comes face-to-face with a criminal, but her husband isn't having any of it.
SPRINGFIELD -- An elderly woman comes face-to-face with a criminal, but her husband isn't having any of it. The 71-year old man took matters into his own hands. He followed the suspect so police could find him. WCIA-3's Alexandrea Davis has more.

The bad guy is just 20-years old, but age was no factor here. A senior citizen helped police track down his wife's suspected purse snatcher.

"He started running through the store and he's holding himself kind of funny and stuff and says, 'they're trying to kill me, they're trying to kill me.'"

Suspect Maurice Reynolds was arrested in Noonan's True Value on North Grand Monday afternoon. That's where store manager, Chris Lewis, crossed paths with Reynolds.

"He came in and said, 'lock the doors,' and took off running through the store."

But before that arrest, 71-year old Bill Garrison's wife was robbed outside her beauty shop. The suspect grabbed her purse and pulled her by its strap. Then it led to a foot chase by a laundry mat and finally to True Value.

Garrison says, "I wasn't going to let him get away because he hurt my wife."

Deputy Police Chief Cliff Buscher says Garrison's brave actions are what ultimately led to Reynold's arrest.

"If it wasn't for the citizens, getting out, helping him, calling us right away, giving us the information, he might have got away, you know. He might have ran. I doubt this elderly gentleman could have kept up with him too long. He did a pretty good job."

Buscher says folks like Bill Garrison are admired in the community.

"We always say we work well in partnership with the community."

Reynolds is facing five charges. He also had two warrants out for his arrest. Garrison's wife is being treated for injuries to her shoulder from when she was pulled by the purse strap.
