Single mom offers helping hand

CHAMPAIGN -- It's the bare essentials a lot of us take for granted. This woman is lending a helping hand. She started a non-profit out of her home to help single moms in Central Illinois survive tough times. WCIA-3's Megan Brilley talks to the single mother.

Arica Moss, mother of three, knows all about the obstacles single moms face. So, she's working everyday to give them a fresh start.

"It was hard in the beginning to support me and my three daughters on my income."

Moss is a full-time student, employee and mother. When she got a divorce 8-years ago, those three titles got a little harder.

"Just through my experiences, what I've seen is that the more you try to do for yourself, the more obstacles come in your way."

She's still not obstacle-free. But, she's turning her struggle into motivation. A few months ago, Moss started her non-profit "Fresh Start Resources." She saves her own money each month to buy detergent, toothpaste, shampoo and diapers for moms in need.

"Sometimes you feel like you're alone, people don't understand. Rather then judging them, I try to walk alongside them and encourage them."

Moss sits down with them once a week to look over their finances, finding ways to make it through another week.

"We look at their budget and try to figure out is there any way you can start saving towards a goal?"

She's found a way to push through her own struggles by motivating others through their own.

"I try to pat them on the back and say you're doing it! Keep going you're almost there."

But, single moms aren't her only motivation.

"It makes me feel proud because my mom helps other people, not just herself."

Moss and her three girls recently moved into a new home given to the family by Habitat for Humanity. She says it's been a great fresh start for her and her family.
