State budget address postponed

SPRINGFIELD -- The annual budget address has been rescheduled.
SPRINGFIELD -- The annual budget address has been rescheduled. Now, Governor Pat Quinn won't lay out his plans until late March. It gives the governor five more weeks to get ready.

A spokesperson for the governor says the request to reschedule isn't unique and he needs more time to prepare. Quinn's office claims the later date will allow the governor to offer a more accurate economic forecast and give him more time to assembly a five-year budget blueprint for the state.

But, Republicans contend, his request to delay is purely political and that he's waiting to give his speech until after the March primary. The governor's spokesperson says the claim is ridiculous, saying Quinn never shies away from making tough calls and taking tough stands.

The previous address was slated for February 19, but now he'll address the General Assembly on March 26. That's one week after the primary.
