SPRINGFIELD -- A campaign to teach young people how to be better behind the wheel kicked off this week at the State Fair. The Department of Transportation says "Operation Teen Safe Driving" has helped lower teen driving deaths by 55% since 2007. It's sponsored by IDOT, state police and Ford.

High schools can apply for grants for the Safe Driving program. Students focus on underage drinking, driving without a seat belt and driving impaired or distracted. More than 100 high schools participated last year.

Applications for this year's program are due in October.
