Station 2 is bigger & better than before

LERNA -- After years of waiting, a crew of firefighters finally got their wish.
LERNA -- After years of waiting, a crew of firefighters finally got their wish. The Lincoln Fire Protection District moved into a new building. WCIA-3's Jessica Shaw finds out why.

The station wasn't big enough. The old building had two bay doors for the fire trucks, but the station has four trucks.

Do the math, definitely not enough room. Station 2 is now settling into its new home.

"It's a dream come true."

"It's a long time coming. We've been working on this for, like four years now."

This new building was desperately needed. Take a look at the old one. It's about 40-years old.

"Going out the doors, it was a lot tighter."

With just two doors, trucks and engines were parked end-to-end.

"We had to pull one out to get the second one out."

The old station didn't have enough room. It also didn't have enough space for volunteers to park.

"We had to park in the street and in the road. At times, it was probably one lane through here."

But, not anymore. Their new place is twice the size. It's got a meeting room, a kitchen and four bay doors; enough space to bring in another fire truck. And parking.

"Wow, we went from a Yugo to a Cadillac."

"We've got room to move around. We've got room to back up to the back of the building."

That space helps volunteer firefighters work more efficiently.

"They suit up, jump in the truck, then have bigger doors to go out."

It's a must in this line of work.

"It's number one. The better we are, the better our guys are, the better we can protect our district."

It's space for them to do their jobs. The public is invited to check out the new space. Station 2 is having an Open House Saturday from 11 - 3.
