Sticker shock after tax notices arrive

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- There are a lot of angry homeowners in Urbana this week. They got their property tax bills in the mail.
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- There are a lot of angry homeowners in Urbana this week. They got their property tax bills in the mail. People say they knew they were going up, but that doesn't make it hurt any less. Michael Blair says his taxes were already pretty high and they've gone up each year he's lived in Urbana. It was about ten percent more this time, but there's not much he can do about it.

"You pretty much have to make ends meet or uproot and move the family across Wright Street into Champaign or to Savoy or wherever else you might be able to afford it a little better," said Blair.

Some people are blaming Carle because the hospital doesn't have to pay property taxes anymore. The city of Urbana had to make up the money. But Champaign County Clerk Gordy Hulton says that's not a fair statement, since the new state law applies to all non-profit health systems.
