Students create app for traffic

CHAMPAIGN -- UI students spent the day testing a new system to help you avoid traffic. It's an app called Trafficturk.

It was created at the UI, and Saturday more than 100 students tested it out. They stood at busy intersections.

Using the app they swiped their fingers across the screen of their smartphones to show how many cars are going through certain intersections. All of the data is sent back to engineering labs on campus, and turned into traffic information. Eventually that will be used to help you avoid busy intersections during your morning commute or an ambulance during an emergency.

"It's pretty interesting. They said that no one else in the world is doing this right now. We could be revolutionizing traffic for the future," said student Fred Idesis.

120 students took part in the experiment. As of now the app is by invitation only. They hope to have a public launch sometime next year. The creator of this app hopes to get the system going at huge events like the Chicago Marathon.
