Successful registration for Schools of Choice

CHAMPAIGN -- This year's Schools of Choice Program is being considered a success. Families learned their kindergarten assignments over the weekend.

The numbers are better than last year. Unit 4 says more families got their first choices. The number unassigned is also better. Last year, 42 families didn't get assigned to a kindergarten. This year, the number is ten. It's less than two percent of the 681 people who applied.

Here's a breakdown of other numbers: almost 99% got one of their top five choices; almost 89% got their top choice. District officials say it's because some of the changes made to this year's process, including a "Welcome to Kindergarten" booklet and longer enrollment period.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Susan Zola says the addition of a twelfth elementary school also helped the process. The International Prep Academy, as well as some newly-renovated schools, gave families even more choices this year.

For the ten who weren't assigned, they've all been called and notified. Dr. Zola says the district works with each of them to find a good solution.
