CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois football team suffered it's first major injury of the preseason.  Junior linebacker Mike Svetina will miss 8-10 weeks after he suffered a broken bone in his foot.  Head coach Tim Beckman says Svetina had surgery Wednesday night to repair the injury.

"[I] saw him this morning," Beckman said.  "He was in great spirits.  It was a successful operation."

Beckman says Svetina fractured his fifth metatarsal in practice Tuesday.

"It was a clear cut fracture," Beckman said.  "It's Big Ten season, if we can get him back by then."

Svetina was Illinois fifth-leading tackler last season with 57 tackles, 2 tackles-for-loss and one forced fumble.  The junior hasn't missed a game since arriving at Illinois.  Beckman says other players will need to step in and make up for the loss of Svetina.

"With Mike out, T.J. Neal is even more crucial," Beckman said.  "We're moving Henry McGrew over there to see what he looks like at that position.  He's been playing the LEO, and then you're talking about Austin Roberts and Tre Watson have got to be guys."
