CHAMPAIGN -- Mayor Don Gerard is urging residents to help prevent flooding. He's asking anyone who can to clear storm drains near their homes.

Public works crews have been doing what they can, but clearing drains is in addition to snow removal and pothole repairs. That's why Mayor Gerard put a plea on Facebook Thursday to ask anyone who can do so safely to clear snow or debris from drains.

It will help keep melting snow from pooling on streets or in basements. So far, he says he's gotten a good response. Gerard says this little bit of help from the community is a great way to pitch in and make things better for everyone.

He says the other day he even got out and cleared one by his home. Many people do the same thing in the fall when leaves get stuck in the drains. so, why not do it with snow? He says, with this winter, public works employees have been hard at work, so anything we can do to pitch in will be a bonus.
