Tax increase suggested to support General Assistance

DECATUR -- If you live in Decatur Township, you could see your property taxes increase after November.
DECATUR -- If you live in Decatur Township, you could see your property taxes increase after November. It will be up to voters to decide.

A tax referendum will be on the ballot. It would raise the rate to $0.02 per $100 assessed property value.

The money would go to a program called General Assistance. It helps people who can't work because of age, illness or disability. More than $1 million in state funding was cut from the program.

The General Assistance Program is required by the state. If the increase doesn't pass, it could mean more cutbacks.
