CHAMPAIGN COUNTY -- A grain truck hit a school bus on a rural road outside Pesotum Monday morning. But that wasn't the only accident on that street. Neighbors say the road is usually pretty calm, but two crashes happened there Monday within a half-mile of one another. WCIA-3's Anna Carrera has more.

Both crashes involved grain trucks. They were just two of many making trips back and forth from the fields, but even people who are used to seeing a busy harvest season were surprised to see what happened. Seeing grain trucks on rural roads is pretty common this time of year, but some have had to make an unexpected stop.

"Everybody's trying to get everything out of the fields," said Donna Grimes.

Donna's been living on 200 N near Pesotum for about 30 years. She says she's never seen anything like that right outside her front door.

"We had a school bus collide with a farm semi-truck," said Villa Grove superintendent Mary Ann Manos.

The bus on the 11 route usually turns around in Donna's driveway before heading back to Villa Grove.

"Today, it was just quite different," said Donna. "A semi just came as they were starting to turn and clipped the front of the bus."

Manos was on the scene within minutes.

"You always think the worst immediately," said Manos.

Two kids were on board. One had minor injuries. Within a half hour of calling their parents, the superintendent sent an emergency message to about 1,000 families in the district.

"Those are long 25-minutes though," said Manos, "so it's very important for us to inform our parents."

Then, a few hours later, just over a mile away, another crash involving another grain semi. This time, a car ran into it.

"Usually it's pretty quiet here," said Donna. "Usually we don't have that many accidents, especially in one day."

Witnesses say in the second accident, the truck driver was trying to make a wide right turn from the left lane. They say he has his turn signal on, but the second driver rear-ended the truck. The woman was ticketed.

There have been several accidents this fall involving school buses. Last month, a school bus and semi collided near Paxton. That same day, a different bus was involved in an accident in Gifford. A couple weeks later, another bus was involved in a crash in Charleston. Last week in Macoupin County, a car rear-ended a school bus. No serious injuries were reported in any of those crashes.
