MAHOMET -- An altercation at an area library led to a 2-hour standoff Monday afternoon. At approximately 2 pm, police responded to the 1700-block of East Oak Street to investigate a man threatening two women with a handgun.

The suspect, identified as Scott McCoughrin, fled prior to officers’ arrival. The victims reported an older white male followed them into a parking lot after a brief altercation on a nearby roadway. The suspect pointed a large handgun at the women and threatened to shoot them.

Based on the license plate provided by the victims, officers went to a residence in the 1000-block of Hillside Lane. McCoughrin answered the door, exchanged a few words and slammed the door shut. He refused to respond to further attempts at contact.

Champaign County Deputies responded to assist. Believing the suspect to be armed, the Metro SWAT Team was also activated and access to the neighborhood was restricted.

Approximately 2-hours later, just after 5 pm, McCoughrin emerged from the house and was taken into custody. A search warrant was executed. A replica handgun, matching the victims' descriptions was recovered. McCoughrin was released on a notice to appear in court for aggravated assault.
