UI trying to balance budget without state funds

CHAMPAIGN -- Hikes in tuition are paying off for the University of Illinois.
CHAMPAIGN -- Hikes in tuition are paying off for the University of Illinois. It has more money to spend even though the state is kicking in less.

The budget for this school year is just under $4.5 billion. That's basically a 1% increase over last year. It's from an extra $52 million from tuition.

School leaders say the money is needed. Part of that investment is in staff. On average, salaries will go up nearly 3%.
