UIC hires Deon Thomas as assistant coach

CHICAGO - Former Illinois basketball star Deon Thomas is getting into the Division-I coaching ranks. Illinois' all-time leading scorer was hired Tuesday as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois-Chicago. "I can't begin to express how excited I am for this opportunity and how much I respect Coach Moore," said Thomas in a statement. "I want to help put UIC basketball back on the map and win championships. I grew up near UIC and would walk past the university almost every day, so this is like a homecoming for me." Thomas has spent the last five years as head coach and athletic director at Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey, Illinois. Thomas played at Illinois from 1991-1994. This is his first Division-I job.
