CHAMPAIGN -- Unit 4 leaders are looking at new options for grades K - 8 for the future. Edison Middle School is one building the board may decide to get rid of. The school first opened 100 years ago, so district leaders say students here need something new.

Dr. Howard, which is also a century old, may also be redone. The school board looked at about 18 different plans Monday night; three have risen to the top of the list.

In two scenarios, Dr. Howard would be rebuilt on a new site. For a third, the elementary school would be torn down and rebuilt where it is. District leaders have been using special software to see which is the best move.

Two plans include staring a school for K - 8 graders by adding onto Barkstall Elementary. The last one just has three middle schools, which the district currently has.

None of the plans include the current Edison building. Students would either get a new building or move into the old Central High School.

There are a lot of ideas on the table, but no final decisions made yet. To get involved in the discussion, there's a school board meeting at the end of the month.
