CHAMPAIGN -- Most students still have a few weeks left of summer, but for some Monday was Graduation Day. Dozens of businesses in the city opened their doors to 130 students for Champaign's Summer Youth Employment Program. The City of Champaign joined with Unit 4 schools to give teens seven weeks of paid work experience.

The program got some teens interested in careers they hadn't considered before. Central Senior Norrlyn-Michael Allen said he will keep contact with the firemen he worked with, and it could help his future.

"I didn't plan on being a fireman, but after working here I definitely gained an interest for it. Maybe some doors will open up later in life and be something I want to do."

The program is designed to create connections and build long-term success for students. This was the third year for the program.
