Using social media to solve crimes

URBANA -- Police are doing more than patrolling the streets to keep people safe.
URBANA -- Police are doing more than patrolling the streets to keep people safe. They're also using social media to help solve crimes.

Urbana police say they don't monitor Facebook or Twitter on a regular basis, but they do use it to help them follow-up on leads. Investigators say sometimes people may not know what sort of things could be incriminating. Other times, it's pretty obvious.

"If you go to the site and there's guns, drugs and narcotics pictures all over it, then you would perhaps be able to confirm your suspicions that way," said Lt. Bryant Seraphin.

Officers say sometimes it helps them track down where suspects may be. They take special training to learn more about social media and how to use it for investigations.
