Volunteers keep marathon runners hydrated

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- An important part of race day is keeping runners hydrated.
CHAMPAIGN-URBANA -- An important part of race day is keeping runners hydrated. There were 9,600 gallons of water along the course Saturday. Volunteers handed out 2,500 gallons of Gatorade. All of it was served in about 139,000 cups. A Christie Clinic doctor says it's vital to keep everyone healthy.

"The longer the run is, the more important it is to keep hydrating yourself," said one volunteer, "If your kidneys work normally, water will be fine. But in the longer runs, especially in warmer weather, you're gonna be losing a lot of electrolytes. That's when things like Gatorade can be helpful."
