Volunteers step up to help turtles in need

URBANA -- A couple of turtles will have a new home this weekend thanks to some generous volunteers.
URBANA -- A couple of turtles will have a new home this weekend thanks to some generous volunteers. Someone dropped off Marcus and Matilda at the Champaign County Humane Society in April.

Shelter manager Kate McGinley says sometimes they can set animals free if they can't find homes for them. But these are Chinese striped-neck turtles, which are not really native to Illinois. McGinley found a place to take them, but didn't have a way to get them there. Volunteers answered the call for help.

"We're going to meet up with the rescue group halfway," said McGinley. "They've picked a halfway point to rendezvous on I-57. We'll be able to send the turtles on their way to a happy rest of their lives but it's wonderful. Our volunteers are wonderful. Of course, social media is a great way to pull everyone together."

McGinley says she was overwhelmed by how many people offered to help. She says this is a good lesson to do your homework before buying a pet so you know you'll want to keep it in the long run.
