Watching kids for signs of stress

GIFFORD -- Teachers are helping students deal with the trauma of witnessing Sunday's destructive storm.
GIFFORD -- Teachers are helping students deal with the trauma of witnessing Sunday's destructive storm. For the past week, teachers mapped out a plan of action.

The goal is to make sure kids understand what exactly happened, but to let them know it's not their fault. The school has one psychologist and five social workers on staff. They want the kids to feel safe and ready to learn.

To do that, they want them to talk about the experience. One-on-one counseling is available for children showing signs of trauma. Caregivers say some kids lost more than others, but all the kids need some attention. They'll pay close attention to watch for any behavioral changes.

Parents can also look for similar signs at home. Community Elements, in Champaign, is also on standby. After teachers evaluate all of the kids this week, they'll decide if any need further assistance helping them cope.
