This Day In Weather History

1961 - 5 to 6 inches of snow fell in central Illinois in a late season snowstorm.  Drifts of to 6 feet formed with the strong winds.  Thousands of cars were stranded; the occupants were forced to take shelter in nearby homes, gyms, armories, and roller rinks.

2006 - This Easter Sunday brought tornadoes to central and southeast Illinois.  The tornadoes were reported, mostly south of I-72.  The strongest tornadoes affected the Effingham and Jasper County border near Wheeler.  Several homes were damaged near Oakley, in Macon County by a downburst producing winds to 110 mph.  By the end of April, 50 tornadoes had already been reported across central and southwest Illinois for the year to date.
