This Day In Weather History

1953 - The first "hook echo" was seen on radar by equipment at the University of Illinois Airport, just south of Champaign.  Studies of the radar image from that day showed that a tornado of significant size and intensity could be detected, identified by a hook shape on the southwest edge of a thunderstorm. 

1982 - The second of two late-season snowstorms affected much of Illinois over a 3-day period ending on this date.  The heaviest snow reports were from Peoria to near macomb with up to 7 inches of snow.  Snowfall in excess of 5 inches were found in a wide area extending from Quincy east to Bloomington.
