This Day In Weather History

1929 - Winter brought 0.6 inches of snow to Springfield, which is the latest date that measureable snow has fallen in the city.

1942 - Many strong tornadoes moved through central Illinois.  Tornadoes first touched down in eastern Morgan County and the moved northeast.  The tornadoes hit south of New Berlin, then moved across far northwestern Springfield, passing south of Elkhart.  The tornado would not lift until near Waynesville, which is in De Witt County.  The town of Franklin had 105 homes damaged or destroyed with some debris being carried for four miles.  One person died and 12 were injured.
