Winter cutting into profits

CHAMPAIGN -- The cold weather is doing damage to some business' bottom lines.
CHAMPAIGN -- The cold weather is doing damage to some business' bottom lines. Restaurant owners say the winter has been worse than usual.

The warning has been issued many times this month: don't go outside unless you have to. People have been listening. The owner of Escobar's says she's seen a drop in sales this month. The only reason she can think of is the frigid temperatures and windchill.

Even though it's been cold, they still see some of their regular customers come in, but there are still more empty tables than she's used to. The owner says she hopes there's a turnaround after Tuesday since it's supposed to get a little warmer.

Plus, Escobar's is part of Champaign's Restaurant Week, which could bring in new guests to try their Caribbean specials. Other restaurant sin the area say they've also seen fewer customers since a lot of their business is foot-traffic.
