Winter Sports Spectacular: Martial Arts

CHAMPAIGN -- Performing at a competition like the Winter Games takes a lot of confidence.
CHAMPAIGN -- Performing at a competition like the Winter Games takes a lot of confidence. So, a martial arts class is teaching just that.

This isn't just any Tae Kwon Do class. It's held at Leaders for Life and put on by the Champaign-Urbana Special Recreation Department.

Besides teaching self-defense, its main goal is to teach confidence. People with special needs come each week to help build physical strength, mental strength and, of course, have fun.

They range from 15 - 50 years old and everyone is at a different level with their training. But, the instructor says that doesn't matter. Everyone leaves at the end of a term in better shape than when they began.

Instructor Mary Reeger says the Tae Kwon Do really helps with everyone's memory skills. So many step up to show others the moves they just learned whether it was the punch or the round house kick.

Reeger says the moves they learn can also help if they're ever in a bad situation. It's a good way to defend themselves.
