CHAMPAIGN -- One of the events people are excited about during the Winter Games is hockey, especially those who are just beginning their careers in the sport. WCIA-3's Erica Quednau shows us how the sport is actually a fairly big deal in the area.

The Champaign-Urbana Youth Hockey Association has been around for more than 40-years. It's helping build popularity for the sports one player at a time.

The players come from all over Central Illinois. Some of them are complete strangers at first, but that's not the case when they hit the ice together.

"We're all a family. We all work together. We do everything together so everybody pulling in the same direction, gets us where we need to be."

"You get to meet a lot of new people from, not just your town, all over Central Illinois."

"Great group of kids. Great group of hockey players and they've been playing together for a long time."

Head coach Dave Charney has been with the team for three years. He says teamwork is the most important thing he teaches.

"We're trying to get everyone on board as a team, as a group."

Because in a game this past paced, having a good support system is key.

"It's a very upbeat, positive, high-tempo experience. Not a lot of time to sit around and think. You've got to be on the ball."

"It's a really high pace. You got to be quick on decisions, know what to do with it. That's why it's so hard because you got to think quick, think and move the puck quick to your teammates."

A great support system at home is what got a lot of these players on the ice in the first place.

"My brother started playing because of the movie, Mighty Ducks. So, I just started playing because he was playing."

"My dad and my grandpa always liked it, so as soon as I was young enough, they took me out to the rinks and picked it up from there."

Whether it's a sport they plan on p0laying forever, or just for now, they're building memories that will last a lifetime.

"It's been awesome."

"Right now, I'm just playing because it's fun and I got a lot of friends out there."

"Absolutely, a very, very fun atmosphere."

The players say they look forward to watching hockey in the Winter Games because it's fun to watch the best players in the world compete.
