Woman wins award for service to community

CHAMPAIGN -- The Jaycees have named an area woman as one of the Most Outstanding Young People in the State.
CHAMPAIGN -- The Jaycees have named an area woman as one of the Most Outstanding Young People in the State. The organization gave her the award earlier this month. WCIA-3's Erica Quednau finds out how she earned the award.

On top of working 40 hours a week, she spends 25 hours giving back to her community.

"I probably don't sleep a lot. I'm getting better though about sleeping."

Whether she's working or off work, Shandra Summerville is giving back.

"I count it as a privilege to be able to make a difference in the community."

Wednesday, she was at the Prairie Center giving employees a pep talk and teaching them to be more culturally responsible.

"People say I'm too busy or don't have time."

Not true, because after she gets off work, Shandra does what she can to help the community. She's involved in her church where she works with kids and the women's safe house. She's also involve din the NAACP, United Way and rotary.

"The Champaign Rotary Club, and the world's greatest rotary, I must say that."

If that wasn't enough, she donates her time in times of need. Like in November, when Gifford was hit by a tornado. Look who showed up to the WCIA-3 News back parking lot to help raise money. It's all those which got her named one of the top ten Most Outstanding Young People in the State.

"I was totally shocked, very humbled and also, it's different for me to be on the other side of getting honored because I'm the one who likes to give accolades to other people."

But, it's about time someone gave one to her.

"I just see it as a lifestyle. I definitely wear many hats, but one of the things I try to do consistently is be able to have an attitude of gratitude and serve with gratitude."

As part of her award, Shandra gets a one-year membership to the Danville Jaycees which she accepted. She says she will make it a priority to be part of that this year on top of everything else she has going on.
