CHAMPAIGN -- October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A group says you have to talk about it to end it, and that's exactly what it did.

The Champaign Police Department and the Center for Women in Transition met in Garden Hills Park Thursday night. They passed out pamphlets and other items to stress the importance of educating the community.

Katie Sissors works for the Center for Women in Transition. She said a lot of people do not want to discuss it.

"It's a sensitive and difficult topic, but I think that through those conversations is really when change comes about."

Police will host more domestic violence awareness events throughout the month of October.
