CHAMPAIGN -- A UI graduate who broke racial boundaries got special recognition Tuesday. A new dorm on campus was officially named after Maudelle Bousfield.

A dedication ceremony was held in her honor. Bousfield graduated in 1906. She was the first black woman to do so at the university.

Her grandson says seeing her name on the building is an honor. After graduation, Bousfield became a math teacher. She went on to become the first black public school principal in Chicago.
